Believing God’s promises

Talking about Abraham, Genesis 15:6 says, “And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” Because Abraham believed the LORD’s promise, it was as if all of his life was righteous before God. This amazing fact begs at least two questions:

1. What about Abraham’s failures?
2. Where did that faith of Abraham came from?

Abraham failed a number of times. And on each time there were consequences. God never looked to the other side when his children sin and fall. But because of his promise, He always extends his help to restore them unto full fellowship with him. The key here is to understand that what is important is not the amount of faith, but the object of that faith.

And where does this faith come from? How can I obtain it? Paul, Ephesians 2:8 says that “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God”. This faith is the product of the work of the Holy Spirit in our heart. Faith is the natural result of a transformed heart, of a renewed mind. Yes, it is ours. No, it is not our work that produces it.
